Fall of Freedom

This November, the B次元官网网址 will participate in the national Fall of Freedom project: a weekend of artistic demonstrations across the country that celebrate freedom of expression and resist authoritarianism, by presenting a free staged reading of It Can’t Happen Here, Sinclair Lewis’s 1935 political satire.

Adapted from Lewis’s novel by Tony Taccone and Bennett S. Cohen, It Can’t Happen Here presents a cautionary dark satire about the fragility of democracy and how fascism can take hold even in the land of liberty. IT CAN’T HAPPEN HERE follows the ascent of a demagogue who becomes president of the United States by promising to return the country to greatness. Witnessing the new president’s tyranny from the sidelines is a liberal, middle-class newspaper editor from Vermont who trusts the system will fix itself—until he ends up in a prison camp. Sinclair Lewis’ eerily prescient 1935 novel gets a fresh update in this adaptation that examines what brings a citizenry to the point of sacrificing its own freedom and how a courageous few can prevail to overcome the fall.

About Fall of Freedom

Fall of Freedom is an urgent call to the arts community to unite in defiance of authoritarian forces sweeping the nation. Our Democracy is under attack. Threats to free expression are rising. Dissent is being criminalized. Institutions and media have been recast as mouthpieces of propaganda.

This Fall, we are activating a nationwide wave of creative resistance. Beginning November 21–22, 2025, galleries, museums, libraries, comedy clubs, theaters, and concert halls across the country will host exhibitions, performances, and public events that channel the urgency of this moment. Fall of Freedom is an open invitation to artists, creators, and communities to take part—and to celebrate the experiences, cultures, and identities that shape the fabric of our nation.

Art matters. Artists are a threat to American fascism.

鈥eeply relatable鈥arrowing鈥IT CAN鈥橳 HAPPEN HERE鈥檚] point [is] that demagogues flourish when thinking but complacent members of a society fail to rise up and act as a collective.
