Charlotte artist Sara Bridgman presents a solo exhibit in the Amy E. Tarrant Gallery and an opening reception on Friday, May 9 at 5:30 pm. The exhibit, Retrospective Works of Sara Bridgman 1967鈥2014, can be seen in the gallery on Saturdays through August 2. Bridgman also gives an artist鈥檚 talk on Saturday, June 21 from 2-4 pm.
Bridgman鈥檚 art began in the 1970s with etchings and she later incorporated oil painting into her work. She spent a good deal of time in the 1980s exploring landscapes. It was during this period that she formed a strong bond by using a practice she calls 鈥渦sing the magic and wonder and developing the spirit of art and sight.鈥 Working in the 1990s, Bridgman worked tirelessly and quietly and became 鈥渃lose to being with the power and intelligence of life itself.鈥
Bridgman鈥檚 paintings of Mary Francis La鈥橫onge began when she envisioned Mary Francis wearing a see-through dress with daisies all over. Mary Francis is an inspirational presence in Bridgman鈥檚 art.
Bridgman studied art at the Montr茅al Museum of Fine Arts, the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts, and she spent four years studying etching at The School of Visual Arts in New York, NY. Her work has been shown at Herbert F. Johnson Museum, Ithaca, NY; Saint Michael鈥檚 College, Colchester, VT; Pierson Library, Shelburne, VT; Webb & Parson Gallery, Burlington, VT; and most recently at JDK Gallery, Burlington, VT.
